LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Marcus Smart had an off game and Oklahoma State lost in a rematch with Memphis. Shaq Goodwin had 17 points, Joe Jackson hit four key late free throws and No. 21 Memphis beat No. 5 Oklahoma State 73-68 Sunday night in the championship game of the Old Spice Classic. Memphis (5-1) held Smart, a preseason All-American, to 12 points. Smart, who played with stomach virus-type symptoms, went 4 for 13 from the field and had five turnovers. "Thats definitely not an excuse," Smart said. "They did an excellent job executing their scouting report. I couldnt find a groove out there." In a meeting between the teams on Nov. 19, Oklahoma State (7-1) won handily over Memphis, getting 39 points from Smart in a 101-80 victory. "It didnt catch me off guard," Smart said. "I knew they were going to make adjustments because of how I played last game. I was fully expecting it. Things werent falling my way." Smart turned the ball over with Oklahoma State trailing by one with 11 seconds left, and fouled Jackson, who made two free throws to make it 71-68. Oklahoma States bid to tie it ended when Smart had another turnover in the final seconds and Jackson connected on two more free throws. "They deserved to win, we didnt deserve to win," Oklahoma State coach Travis Ford said. "We just werent ourselves. Not taking anything away from Memphis at all, but we were our own worst enemy on a lot of occasions. Im a little surprised that it was even, as bad as we played, as close as it was. Give Memphis credit, they were a very determined basketball team." Chris Crawford scored on a layup and later added a free throw to put Memphis ahead 69-64 with 2 1/2 minutes left. Smart, who missed 9 of his first 11 shots, had consecutive baskets that pulled the Cowboys within 69-68 with 2 minutes to play. "On the defensive end, we didnt play like were used to," Smart said. "Some costly buckets at costly times." Crawford finished with 16 points, while Jackson had 11. "Im not a revenge guy," Memphis coach Josh Pastner said. "Im not like an ill-will guy. I think when you hold things in, things come out sideways. I talked to our guys about that. We needed to have course correction, and we corrected some of the course." Michael Dixon Jr. hit a jumper and 3-pointer as Memphis went ahead 56-52 with 8 minutes remaining. Memphis scored the first seven points in the second half, including a 3-point play by Goodwin, to cut its deficit to 42-39. After Memphis Geron Johnson was given a technical foul, Phil Forte made two free throws and added a 3-pointer to make it 47-39. Forte had nine of 19 points as Oklahoma overcame a six-point deficit to take a 42-32 lead at halftime. Smart had two of his five points during the opening 20 minutes on a layup and Brian Williams had a rebound basket during the final minute to give the Cowboys a 10-point advantage. Oklahoma State saw comfortable leads disappear in both of its two previous games at the tourney. The Cowboys let a 23-point halftime lead dwindle to four with 3 minutes to play before beating Purdue 97-87 Thursday, and then escaped with a 69-67 victory over Butler one day later after taking a 44-30 halftime advantage. Goodwin scored 11 first-half points, including a jumper that put Memphis up 21-15 10 minutes into the game. BRISBANE, Australia -- Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova are set to renew their long and not-so-friendly rivalry in the semifinals at the Brisbane International, a key warm-up tournament for the Australian Open. The pair played back-to-back quarterfinals on centre court Thursday, with the third-seeded Sharapova beating 2012 Brisbane champion Kaia Kanepi of Estonia 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. She dropped three service games in the first set and another to open the second before finding her range and staging her comeback against the No. 30-ranked Kanepi. The top-ranked Williams, the defending champion, was next on court and didnt lose a point on serve in the first set en route to a 6-3, 6-3 win over ninth-seeded Diminika Cibulkova of Slovakia. Williams has a 14-2 record and 13-match winning streak against Sharapova dating back to the 2005 Australian Open semifinals, beating the Russian most recently in last years French Open final. Any friendship the pair had at that stage soured when they traded personal barbs relating to their romantic relationships ahead of Wimbledon, where Sharapova made an early exit. Sharapova only played one match after that in 2013 and spent the latter months of the season recovering from a right shoulder problem. Williams, meanwhile, had a spectacular year, winning 78 of her 82 matches and capturing 11 titles, including two majors. As far as any grudges go, Williams said Thursday: "Its very difficult I think for anyone to be best buddies when youre so competitive." Sharapova didnt back away from the comments she made about Williams at Wimbledon in a New York Times profile last month, giving the impression that the relationship between the pair was still cold. On Thursday, she said shed used the newspaper interview to "clear the air." Asked how shed describe their rivalry now, Sharapova replied: "Well, I think I got to win a few times in order to call it rivalry." "I havent had a lot of success against her," she added. "Its the first tournament of the year. I came here wanting to play as many matches as I could and obviously wanting to play the best.&qquot; Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka had difficulty closing out her quarterfinal match before beating Stefanie Voegele 6-4, 6-7 (7), 6-1.dddddddddddd The second-seeded Azarenka failed to convert eight match points in the second set -- three serving at 5-4 and another five in the tiebreaker -- before Voegele rallied to force a third. Azarenka raced to a 4-0 lead in the deciding set, dropped serve and then finally finished it off on her 10th match point. "Yeah, I made it ... about 20 times harder than it should have been," Azarenka said. "I definitely should have closed it out a little earlier." Azarenka will next face fourth-seeded Jelena Jankovic, who beat fifth-seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany 6-7 (8), 6-3, 6-1. In mens second-round matches, Romanian qualifier Marius Copil beat third-seeded Gilles Simon 7-5, 6-3 and will next meet former No. 1-ranked Lleyton Hewitt, who ousted No. 6-seeded Feliciano Lopez 7-5, 6-3. No. 8-seeded Jeremy Chardy beat Nicolas Mahut 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-3 and fourth-seeded Kevin Anderson withdrew due to a stomach ailment before his scheduled second-round match against Australian wildcard entry Sam Groth. In other Australasian tournaments, Milos Raonic and Eugenie Bouchard combined to give Canada a 3-0 win over Italy at the Hopman Cup in Perth, and Venus Williams and Ana Ivanovic progressed to the semifinals at the WTA Tours ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand. Canada (2-1) maintained a chance of qualifying for Saturdays Hopman Cup final from Group A when Raonic beat Andreas Seppi 6-2, 6-4 and Bouchard clinched it when Flavia Pennetta retired with a right wrist injury while trailing 4-0 in the first set. Poland also won, beating Australia 2-1. In Auckland, Venus Williams beat Garbine Muguruza of Spain 6-3, 6-3 and the second-seeded Ivanovic beat Kurumi Nara of Japan 6-2, 6-3. CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The Cincinnati Reds had a five-game winning streak snapped and that was just the start of the bad news Thursday. Luis Valbuena hit a tiebreaking, two-run triple in the 12th inning and the Chicago Cubs avoided a rare five-game sweep in Cincinnati with a 6-4 win in 12 innings. The Reds found out during the game that second baseman Brandon Phillips would be out six weeks after he has surgery on Friday to repair torn ligaments in his left thumb. He was injured diving for a ground ball Wednesday night and an MRI on Thursday revealed torn ligaments. Starter Homer Bailey left the game with a 1-2 count on Starlin Castro leading off the third. It appeared his spike caught on the mound and he was removed from the game with a strained right patellar tendon. Then tempers flared on the field with both benches and bullpens emptying in the ninth but no punches were thrown and there were no ejections. In the 12th, highly regarded prospect Arismendy Alcantara singled with one out and went to second on Castros two-out infield single. Valbuena, 0 for 4 with three strikeouts, sent a ball to deep right field off J.J. Hoover (1-6) that Skip Schumaker couldnt catch up to and. Valbuena was thrown out at the plate trying to stretch it into an inside-the-park home run. The out call stood after an umpire crew chief request for a replay review to make sure the new rule regarding home plate collisions wasnt violated. Blake Parker (1-0) pitched the last two innings and the Cubs snapped their losing streak at a season-high six games. The Reds scored three runs in the first inning off Kyle Hendricks, who was making his major league debut. Ryan Ludwick hit his sixth home run of the season in the third inning to give the Reds a 4-1 lead. Baileys wildness provided the Cubs with enough baserunners to creep back into the game. "Its baseball so you have these situations over the course of the year. Castro did a nice job getting the hit in the eighth. You have to acknowledge the fact that they played a nice ballgame," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "He (Hendricks) worked around a three-run first inning and really held us down. It wasnt so much that it got away from us as they went out and outplayed us." Bailey, who hit Anthony Rizzo in the first inning, grazed Baker with a pitch with one out in the fifth. One out later, he walked Coghlan. Alcantara doubled, the first of his four hits, to score both runners. The Reds held the lead until Castro singled home Alcantara with two outs in the eighth off Jonathan Broxton, who came into the game with seven straight scoreless appearances. It was just the third run Broxton has allowed in 31 innings. Aroldis Chapman struck out Ryan Sweeney and Nate Schierholtz in the ninth to tie Bruce Sutter as the only relief pitcher since 1900 to strike out at least one batter in 39 straight appearances. Two pitches to Schierholtz were up and in and Rizzo approached the Reds bench with angry words for Chapman before the Reds batted in the bottom of the inning. "There were two pitches that got away from me," Chapman said through interpreter Tomas Vera. "Their bench started to say something to me and their first baseman came over to our bench." Alfredo Simon met Rizzo on the field. "There was a lot of testosterone on the field," Price said. "That is the way baseball is. We hit Rizzo, certainly unintentional. Cozart got hit in the hand certainly that was unintentional. Chapman had the ball get away from him up and in and things got a little testy. Its baseball Were trying to win every game we can as are the Cubs. I just think it was an overflow of testosterone." Cozart had ice on his left hand as he spoke to the media. "I knew they would be frustrated. Were frustrated," Cozart said. "Whether its on purpose or not, no one likes balls coming at them. My hand is just a little swollen." NOTES: The Reds promoted INF Kristopher Negron from Triple-A Louisville and optioned RHP Carlos Contreras to Louisville before the game. Cubs David Ross Jersey . -- Chicago manager Darold Butler has a message for the Windy City.LOS ANGELES -- Led by a pair of precocious rookies, the Los Angeles Dodgers got themselves right back into the NL championship series. Hyun-Jin Ryu outpitched Adam Wainwright with seven innings of three-hit ball, and Yasiel Puig celebrated twice on his RBI triple that helped Los Angeles beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-0 Monday night in Game 3. Adrian Gonzalezs RBI double ended a 1-for-17 drought for the Dodgers with runners in scoring position. An ailing Hanley Ramirez added a run-scoring hit as Los Angeles handed Wainwright his first post-season loss and trimmed its deficit to 2-1 in the best-of-seven series. "The playoffs are one-day momentum swings," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "Right now I feel like weve kind of grabbed it." Puigs youthful exuberance, which energized the Dodgers as they surged from last place to first during a torrid midseason stretch, was on full display in the fourth inning. The 22-year-old Cuban defector was so excited when he connected that he raised his arms immediately and stood in the batters box to watch the flight of the ball toward right field, clearly thinking it was going out of the park. Once he realized it wasnt, Puig started charging. He roared into third base and clapped his hands before raising them again as the sellout crowd of 53,940 cheered. Puig had reason to exult, having struck out seven times in the series before getting his first hit. "He brings unbelievable energy every day," Ramirez said. "When we spoke to him, he told me, I got it today, and he did. Hes a great player." Game 4 is Tuesday at Dodger Stadium, with Ricky Nolasco scheduled to start against St. Louis right-hander Lance Lynn. But there was speculation the Dodgers might switch to Zack Greinke, especially after they passed over Nolasco with short notice in the previous round. "Everybodys trying to do the best they can to get to the World Series," Puig said through a translator. Los Angeles got Ramirez and centre fielder Andre Ethier back in the lineup after both proved in batting practice they were healthy enough to play. Ramirez wore a lightweight flak jacket to protect his broken left rib -- having been hit by a pitch from Joe Kelly in Game 1 -- while Ethier has been bothered by shin splints. "What can I say? It couldnt be better," Ramirez said. "Really happy we got the first win. Just come back tomorrow and even up the series." Ramirez singled his first time up off Wainwright and then helped the Dodgers extend their lead to 3-0 in the eighth. Ramirez hit a soft single off Seth Maness over the head of second baseman Kolten Wong to score Carl Crawford. The speedy Crawford, on second base after a one-out single, rounded third and never stopped running when the throw from the outfield went to second base. On a close play at the plate, Crawford barely beat the tag by catcher Yadier Molina. "We just had a lot of balls in the air tonight that hit the ground that normally dont," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. "Were a better club than this." During the rally, retired Dodgers manager Tom Lasorda, whose 1988 team won the franchises last World Series title, stood up and waved his white rally towel to raucous applause. "We just knew we had to scratch away and get a win," Dodgers catcher A.J. Ellis said. "We needed a great starting pitching performance from Hyun-Jin, and we got that. You knew it was going to be tough sledding against a guy like Adam. Hes so good, especially on the big stage, so we were fortunate we scratched a couple of runs across." Wainwright entered 4-0 with a 2.03 ERA and four saves inn 15 career post-season games, including six starts.dddddddddddd He pitched St. Louis past Pittsburgh in the division series, going the distance in a decisive Game 5 last Wednesday. The right-hander tossed seven strong innings this time, allowing two runs and six hits with five strikeouts and no walks. Ryu, however, was even better. "I hate to lose," Wainwright said. "I felt like tonight if I had got a couple of balls in there, we win the game. I think you just have to tip your hat and move on." The two pitchers were nearly even through the first three scoreless innings, with Wainwright giving up one hit. Ryu, who struggled in his first post-season start in the division series against Atlanta, retired 12 of his first 13 batters, yielding only a walk. "I just zoned in," Ryu said. Ryu was much improved after lasting just three innings as the first South Korean pitcher to start a playoff game last week against the Braves. He allowed four runs on six hits for a no-decision in a game the Dodgers won. The left-hander didnt permit a Cardinals runner past second base. David Freeses single to right leading off the fifth was their first hit of the game. Freese was replaced by a pinch-runner because of tightness in his right calf. He is day to day. Ryu struck out four and walked one. Mattingly came out to the mound accompanied by a translator with two outs in the seventh. Ryu responded by striking out Matt Adams to end the inning as Ellis pumped his right arm in the air. Fans waved South Korean flags in support of Ryu. "Its definitely a big motivation when you see your star players go out there hurt," Ryu said through a translator. "It really inspires you and motivates you to go out there and do the best you can." Kenley Jansen pitched a perfect ninth for a save. Major League Baseball noted on Twitter that the nine combined runs in the series are the fewest ever through three games of a league championship series, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. After the first two games in St. Louis were decided by one run, the Dodgers got to Wainwright in the fourth and took a 2-0 lead. Gonzalezs double down the right-field line scored Mark Ellis, who doubled leading off. Gonzalez smacked his hands together in a celebratory gesture resembling an explosion. "I saw Adrian doing some Mickey Mouse stuff at second," Wainwright said. Gonzalez replied: "I did what I always do. Mickey Mouse is only an hour away so, you know, it fits us." With two outs, Puig tripled off the wall in right to snap his 0-for-11 skid in the series. Cardinals centre fielder Jon Jay was involved in an apparent miscommunication when the ball hit by Mark Ellis dropped between him and right fielder Carlos Beltran. The Dodgers first hit, a single by Ramirez to shallow centre in the first, dropped between Jay and second baseman Matt Carpenter. "Its a ball Ive got to catch. Im the centre fielder. Its my ball. Ive got to take charge," Jay said. "It came back to haunt us, but thats part of baseball. Youre going to make mistakes sometimes." NOTES: The Dodgers snapped a stretch of 22 innings without a run in the fourth. They hadnt scored since the third inning of Game 1. ... Ethier was 0 for 4 with a strikeout. ... They were just happy to hear the talented right-hander should be able to make his next start after a scary play at first base. Alvarez injured his left hip in the sixth, but Miami made the most of a wild afternoon for Pedro Strop in a 4-3 win over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday that averted a three-game series sweep. The Marlins trailed 3-2 before they pushed across two runs in the eighth. They loaded the bases with one out on a walk, a hit by pitch and a single from Casey McGehee. Christian Yelich then scored on Garrett Jones sacrifice fly and Giancarlo Stanton came home on a wild pitch from Strop (0-3). Steve Cishek then struck out two in a scoreless ninth that gave him 14 saves in 15 tries. The Cubs got six scoreless innings from Jake Arrieta, but came up just short in a bid for their first six-game winning streak since a seven-game run in 2011. "I think these guys should keep their heads up," Cubs manager Rick Renteria said. "Theyre very disappointed right now because we felt like we were on the cusp of being able to have a perfect homestand." Mike Dunn (5-3) got two outs for the win, but that was secondary for Miami after Alvarez went down. He began the day with a streak of 21 scoreless innings and is regarded as the Marlins best pitcher after Jose Fernandez was shelved by a season-ending elbow surgery. With one out in the sixth inning of a scoreless tie, Luis Valbuena grounded to Jones at first. Alvarez hustled over to cover the bag, but Jones toss was high. The pitcher reached to tap the base with his right foot but missed and landed awkwardly, straining his left hip. "He seems to be OK," manager Mike Redmond said. "Hes got enough time in between starts. He should be finne.dddddddddddd Obviously well know better tomorrow or the next couple of days." After Miamis training staff and Redmond came out to see him, Alvarez threw one warm-up pitch to see if he could continue but quickly left the mound. He was charged with two runs, one earned, and seven hits. "At first I felt like I fell (and) I banged myself on ground. I just continued on, I got up, I felt I could continue to pitch," Alvarez said through a translator. "I went out there, I did what I could to pitch. At the end of the day it was a decision by the manager." Nate Schierholtz then greeted Dan Jennings with a two-run triple down the right-field line that gave the Cubs a 2-0 lead. Alvarez is considered day to day, a relief for the surprising Marlins (33-30). "I feel good," he said. "Thank God." Jones, who was charged with an error on the play, also was relieved that Alvarez was OK. He said he needed a couple pitches during his seventh-inning at-bat to refocus. "You never want to be the guy to make the mistake to lose a game," Jones said. "But that play, hes been our best pitcher, and to lose him on a play like that, it stinks." Luckily for Miami, it probably wont be without Alvarez for long. "We cant afford any injuries - especially to those pitchers. Weve already had that happen and we cant afford anybody else to get hurt," Redmond said. "Definitely concerned (when Alvarez left) but it looks like hes going to be fine so hopefully we got lucky there." NOTES: The Marlins have a couple off days coming up and the plan is to keep its rotation intact. That could change if RHP Nathan Eovaldis pregnant wife hasnt given birth by Wednesday. ... Marlins C Jarrod Saltalamacchia was eligible to come off the seven-day concussion disabled list but wasnt activated. Canada has drawn a deep group that includes China (14th in the latest FIFA Womens World Rankings), New Zealand (19th) and the Netherlands (15th) for the opening round of the 2015 FIFA Womens World Cup. Opening the competition on June 6 in Edmonton against China, Canada also plays New Zealand in Edmonton on June 11. They will finish group play June 15 in Montreal against the Netherlands. The World Cup Draw, held in Gatineau, Que. placed the 24 qualified teams for the tournament in six groups of four. The Canadian team sits eighth in the world in the FIFA rankings. The team qualified automatically for the tournament as hosts and famously won Olympic bronze in their last competition: the 2012 London Games. Canada has undertaken a difficult schedule of friendlies in 2014, however, playing four of the top five teams in the most recent FIFA rankings. The results were mixed, but largely encouraging: earning a 1-1 draw with the top-ranked Americans in May, and a win and a draw against fifth-ranked Sweden in Los Angeles in late November. They were bested in both games they played against No. 3 Japan in October, losing 3-0 in Edmonton and 3-2 in Vancouver. They were also beat 2-1 by No. 2 Germany in June. China were one of the first teams to qualify for the World Cup, advancing to the Asian Cup semifinal on May 17. They gave the defending World Cup Champions from Japan a scare in the semifinal, losing 1-0 after extra time. The team did not qualify for the 2011 World Cup in Germany after having qualified for the previous five tournaments. Once a world power, China were runners-up to the United States at the 1999 tournament, losing on Brandi Chastains iconic penalty kick. The nation has twice hosted the World Cup, first the inaugural tournament in 1991 and later in 2007. They have advanced to the knockout stage in four of their five appearances, losing in the quarter-finals three of four times. The Netherlands were the second-last team to qualify for the World Cup, securing their berth on Nov. 27 in the UEFA qualification play-off. They finished second to Norway in their qualification group, but the 25 points they secured through 10 games, earned them a chance to secure the lone spot available to a European runner-up via playoffs. The Dutch team beat Scotland 4-1 on aggregate in the semifinal before going on to top Italy 3-2 to earn a trip to Canada. This marks the first trip to the Womens World Cup for the Dutch, whose best international result to date was a third-place finish at the 2009 European Championship. New Zealand qualified for the World Cup by winning the Oceania Football Confederation Cup by going 3-0 and outscoring opponents 30-0 in the tournament. The Kiwis have qualified for the previous two World Cups in addition to having made the inaugural tournament. They have never won a match at the World Cup, going 0-1-8 (W-D-L). Current Canadian head coach John Herdman coached New Zealand at the previous two World Cups. The Group of Death was handed to the defending Olympic gold medalists from the United States in Group D. The top-ranked Americans were handed Sweden (fifth in the world), Australia (10th) and African champions Nigeria (35th). Winnipeg will play host to the first four Group D games with USA-Nigeria taking place in Vancouver and Australia-Sweden in Edmonton to wrap up the round. Japan was handed a relatively easy group, drawing 18th-ranked Switzerland, 51s-ranked Cameroon and 49th-ranked Ecuador. Group C will be based in Vancouver before a third games in Winnipeg and Edmonton. Germany drew stiff competition for the top of their group with former Champions Norway, but also have 30th-ranked Thailand and 64th-ranked Ivory Coast alongside. The Ivorians are the lowest-ranked team to qualify for the tournament. Group B will play in Ottawa before moving to Winnipeg and Moncton for their opening round finales. Group E sees sixth-ranked Brazil alongside Spain (16), Korea Republic (17) and Costa Rica (40) in Montreal before a move to Moncton and Ottawa. Finally, Group F pits fourth-ranked France with seventh-ranked England, 25th-ranked Mexico and 31st-ranked Colombia in Moncton before moving to Ottawa and Montreal. See the related links in this article for the full tournament schedule. Just ask last seasons Supporters Shield winners, the New York Red Bulls, who were resoundingly defeated last weekend by a rampant Vancouver Whitecaps in a match which produced two contenders for MLS Goal of the Week from Sebastian Fernandez and Pedro Morales. On February 20, down 2-0 against the Americans with under four minutes to play, it looked as if the Canadian womens hockey teams dream of capturing their fourth straight Olympic gold medal had faded away. Team Canadas experience though allowed them to overcome the late 2-0 deficit and make history beating the Americans 3-2 in overtime. However, the comeback that happened in less than 15 minutes of playing time took years of experience and preparation. On the bench was Jayna Hefford. A member of every Canadian Olympic team since 1998, Hefford used all of that experience for the tense third period and overtime. "With six, seven minutes left in the third, I thought its not looking good, but that thought only lasted five seconds. Once we got that first one, I knew wed be fine." Hefford and Team Canada faced a big hurdle weeks before the historic gold medal game. Dan Church, their coach since 2012, unexpectedly resigned two months before the Olympics were to begin. Also, many veterans that were expected to carry a lot of the teams responsibilities were surprisingly not selected. "With Dan, we tried to ask some questions to get some answers, but we really didnt find anything. It got to the point where we realized the decision was out of our hands." Under new coach Kevin Dineen, the team spent ten days in Austria to regroup before they headed to Sochi. It was a time for rest and recuperation before the competition since every member of the team was exhausted both physically and mentally. Despite the challenges, the Canadians puut together a string of wins that led them to the gold medal game.dddddddddddd And the team didnt need any extra motivation when they saw who was at the other end of the ice. "There is no one youd rather beat then the Americans. Theyre the best team outside of us. Thats the team you want to play in any final," says Hefford. Although the Canadians were down a pair of goals, that first tally gave them a lifeline. The second goal tied the game, creating emotions for even the veteran players that thought they had seen it all. "When (Marie-Philip) Poulin got the tying goal, thats the most excited Ive ever been for any moment of a game in any moment of my career," Hefford says. "But in the third period and overtime, you try to contain your emotions a little bit." The team could let their emotions lose eight minutes into overtime when Poulin, who was the hero in Vancouver in 2010, scored again to give Canada yet another gold. "It still feels very surreal how that game dramatically turned. Its such a great feeling and its still hard to believe," says Hefford. Theres very little Hefford has not accomplished in her career but after a fourth gold medal, it would be tempting to go for a fifth in 2018. "After Vancouver I didnt know if I was going to keep playing. I felt really good and I thought I had four more years. But now its time for me to look at my options. Going out after a game like that would be perfect." There is nothing more perfect than going out on top of the hockey world. 11. Yanda returns to practice The Baltimore Ravens held their first of two joint practices with the Los Angeles Rams on Monday afternoon Tavon Young Jersey , and only nine players were absent. Wide receiver and return specialist Tim White missed his third consecutive practice following Baltimore’s first preseason game. White is considered to be dealing with a minor injury, and he is expected to play in Baltimore’s preseason clash with the Rams. Undrafted free agents Randin Crecelius and Jaelon Acklin missed their second-straight practice, but again, both of their injuries are considered not to be serious. There were no changes to the PUP list, which means Quincy Adeboyejo, Jaylen Hill and Bam Bradley all missed practice on Monday. They are all expected to start the season on the PUP list as well. Tyus Bowser continues to be sidelined with an undisclosed injury, while Tony Jefferson is still dealing with a ‘pull,’ according to John Harbaugh. Jefferson missed the Hall of Fame Game and now the three practices after it. Offensive lineman Maurquice Shakir also missed his third consecutive practice, despite playing in the Hall of Fame Game. He is considered to be on the roster bubble. The good news for Baltimore is that several players returned to the practice field on Monday: Marshal Yanda, Anthony Averett Terrell Suggs Jersey , Bennett Jackson and Tim Williams. Yanda is not expected to be a full participant in practice nor will he play in Baltimore’s upcoming matchup against the Rams. Nevertheless, it is still good for him to shake off the rust before the regular season.Bold Predictions: Ravens vs. Bengals Week 1 proved to be more of a primer than a challenge when Baltimore decimated the Buffalo Bills. But how will the Ravens fair in their first road test and divisional game? The Baltimore Beatdown staff forecasts how tonight’s edition of Thursday Night Football will shake out. Sage’s predictions:Only one member of the new receiver trio will score a touchdown. In a dominant performance over the Bills, John Brown, Michael Crabtree and Willie Snead IV all scored in their debuts. However, on a short week against a divisional opponent on the road, only one of the new additions will have an encore performance in the end zone. The Baltimore defense gets far less pressure on the quarterback.Compared to an inexperienced Nathan Peterman, Andy Dalton will be much better at evading sacks. Expect the Ravens to fall significantly short of their six sack total against the Bills in Week 1. Janarion Grant shakes off his first game jitters. As an undrafted rookie, Grant displayed both flashes of brilliance with a 51-yard punt return and moments of ineptitude when he fumbled. With the nerves and anticipation of his first regular season appearance behind him, Grant will show more consistency as a returner in Cincinnati if his hand injury does not keep him off the field. Vasilis’ predictions:James Hurst will allow three sacks. The Bengals stable of potent pass rushers will attack an untested Hurst. Rookie Orlando Brown Jr. will become the starting right tackle sooner rather than later.Buck Allen will eclipse 100 yards from scrimmage. After Alex Collins’ fumble and Kenneth Dixon’s injury, Allen is in line for an increased workload. Buck will make the most of the opportunity and have a big impact in the short passing game.Tyler Eifert will record 10 catches. As the Ravens stack the box to shut down Cincinnati’s rushing attack Authentic Ronnie Stanley Jersey , Eifert will serve as Andy Dalton’s outlet valve. Baltimore still does not have the personnel to effectively cover dynamic tight ends. Dustin’s predictions:Lamar Jackson scores a touchdown.Against the Bills, we saw several different packages featuring Lamar Jackson. While none were particularly successful, opposing teams now know they must game plan for him now. Jackson will once again have a role in this game, and this time he will score a rushing touchdown in the red zone. A.J. Green will be shutdown. Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green has given the Ravens fits for years. However, Green was virtually a non-factor in both games against Baltimore last season. This was in thanks to the excellent play from cornerbacks Jimmy Smith and Marlon Humphrey. Although Smith is currently suspended, Humphrey will once again step up to the task and limit Green to under 30 receiving yards.Joe Flacco will not throw an interception. Flacco started the season with a dominant performance over Buffalo last Sunday, throwing for three touchdowns and zero interceptions. Flacco looks confident and poised in the pocket right now, which will be on full display against Cincinnati. Flacco’s decision making was impeccable in Week 1 and that will continue this week. While he will not throw for three touchdowns again, Flacco will protect the ball and manage the game well.

Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Guard Greivis Vasquez and forward Patrick Patterson, two key pieces to the Toronto Raptors run to an Atlantic Division title in 2013-14, were both given qualifying offers by the team on Saturday. By doing so, the Raptors retain the right to match any offer sheet the restricted free agents receive from another team. Both players came to Toronto in December as part of the trade with Sacramento that sent high-scoring forward Rudy Gay to the Kings. Vasquez averaged 9.5 points and 3.7 assists in 61 regular-season games as Kyle Lowrys backup with the Raptors. The four-year veteran led Toronto in scoring off the bench 25 times after joining the club. Patterson also played an important reserve role with the Raptors, averaging 9.1 points and 5.1 rebounds in 48 games as Torontos primary forward off the bench. The 25-year-old then tallied 10.4 points and 6.7 rebounds per game during the clubs opening-round playoff series with the Brooklyn Nets. ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Josh Harding has been perhaps the feel-good story of the NHL season, putting up numbers unmatched for a goalie after revealing that he has multiple sclerosis. The Minnesota Wild goalie was placed on injured reserve Wednesday night to give him time to make adjustments to medication, and the team is confident he will return in top form. "Over the next week, Josh will make a minor adjustment to his treatment protocol," Wild GM Chuck Fletcher said in a statement issued by the team. "Josh feels great and he looks forward to rejoining our team for our game in Winnipeg on Dec. 27." That Fletcher put an exact timeline on Hardings return is encouraging for a team that has leaned heavily on him to keep them in the playoff picture in the demanding Western Conference. Harding revealed this summer that he had been diagnosed with MS, but planned to continue playing while getting taking medication. There were plenty of skeptics. But after starting the season as the backup to Niklas Backstrom, Harding asserted himself as the Wilds unquestioned No. 1 goalie. Hes gone 18-5-3 and leads the NHL with a 1.51 goals-against average and .939 save percentage. He is fresh off making 29 saves and stopping all three shootout attempts by Vancouver in Minnesotas 3-2 victory over the Canucks on Tuesday night. Harding will have to miss at least a week while on injured reserve. That means he will be out at least three games. Backstrom, who is 2-5-2 with a 2.93 goals-against average, will carry the load while Harding is way. PHOENIX -- Phoenix was flying high after a blowout win over Indiana. Then the Washington Wizards came to town and brought down the Suns with a thud. Trevor Ariza scored 23 points, Bradley Beal sank a pair of crucial shots down the stretch and the Wizards opened a four-game road trip Friday night with a 101-95 victory. Beals 3-pointer with 2:03 left gave the Wizards the lead for good at 96-93. His 15-footer made it 99-95 with 26.9 seconds to go, then he finished with a game-ending dunk. "I knew that eventually the ball was going to come my way and I just stayed ready," Beal said. "I wasnt making too many shots throughout the game, but I just stayed with it and stayed confident." John Wall had 18 points and 12 assists for the Wizards. Nene scored 18, Beal 17 and ex-Sun Marcin Gortat 14 for Washington. Goran Dragic had 19 points and 11 assists for the Suns, who had handed the Pacers their worst loss of the season, a 24-point blowout on Wednesday night. Channing Frye scored 16, Miles Plumlee 14 and Markieff Morris 13 for Phoenix. "We cant play that way," Frye said. "Too many turnovers and terrible defence." After making 11 of 16 3-pointers against Indiana, the Suns were 7 of 22 against Washington, just 1 of 12 in the second half. Washington, which pulled back to .500 with the win, outrebounded Phoenix 44-30, including 19-9 on the offensive boards. After nine turnovers against Indiana, Phoenix had 21 on Friday. "There was a bunch of things," Suns coach Jeff Hornacek said. "We had 21 turnovers. Its been probably six or seven games since we have a big turnover night. Then the offensive rebounds -- they got 19 of them. So all that stuff adds up." The Suns rallied from an eight-point deficit late to tie it at 93 on Plumlees hook shot with 2:43 to go. But P.J. Tucker missed two free throws that would have given Phoenix the lead, then Beal made the go-ahead 3. Nene made one of two free throws with 1:38 to go to boost the lead to 97-93, and Plumlees dunk on a pass from Dragic cut it to 97-95 with 41.9 seconds left. Beals 15-footer with 26.9 seconds remaining put Washington ahead 99-95, then after a pair of missed 3s by the Suns, his dunk ended it. Frye said the Suns are mistaken to think that the win over Indiana was a big deal. "If your season was betting on beating the Pacers one time at home," he said, "then, hey, I think we need to sit you back down and let you know youve got 81 more." Ariza switched onto Frye and shut him down after a 12-point first quarter. "It was just defensive intensity," he said. "When we press up defensively and get stops, it ignites our offence. Its what gets me going. When we play good defence, were a good team." Phoenix led 57-51 at halftime and was up 59-51 after Frye opened the third quarter with a basket. Washington then took off on a 17-4 run. Hornacek drew a technical during the outburst for complaining about an offensive foul call on Dragic. Nenes driving layup capped the spurt and put the Wizards up 68-63 with 7:06 left in the third quarter. Nenes dunk put the Wizards ahead 89-81 with 8:17 to go, then Dragic led the Suns back. He sank a 16-footer, Gerald Green got a layup after Nenes turnover, then Dragic scored on a driving layup to cut Washingtons lead to 89-87 with 6:13 to go. But Dragic missed a layup in traffic that would have tied it, Nene rambled down the lane for a dunk and Washington led 91-87 just 5:28 from the finish. Phoenix managed to get even one more time, but then Beal finished it off. "It didnt all go our way," Wizards coach Randy Wittman said. "We had a couple of breakdowns there and they tied it up but we came down and made some plays." There were 19 lead changes in the game and neither team led by double figures. Less than a week into its Brazil campaign, England is already out of contention after losses to Italy and Uruguay. Not since 1958 had England failed to make it to the second round of a World Cup it qualified for. "Its vital we take the pain we are feeling now and remember that and the next tournament we dont want to feel that again," Rooney said Saturday. "Obviously we are hurting," the striker added. "We are really disappointed to be out of the tournament. I am sure you can imagine its quite tough, a long few days for us." The players will sign off with a Group D finale against surprise leader Costa Rica on Tuesday when Rooney wants the teams pride restored. "These next few days wiill be tough, but we have to be strong together as a team," Rooney said.dddddddddddd"We have to make sure we are positive for the next game." For goalkeeper Joe Hart, Englands 2-1 losses in Brazil are his worst moments in football. "Its a strange empty feeling," Hart said. "This is ultimately really cruel and gutting for me." Roy Hodgson is set to remain in charge going forward, with the Football Association asking the coach to see out his contract to the 2016 European Championship. And Rooney can see progress under Hodgson, who took charge before Euro 2012. "He has brought a great enthusiasm to the team ... Roy is the man to take us forward," Rooney said. Carey Price gets the call in net for Canada when it takes on Finland to wrap up preliminary round play at the 2014 Winter Olympics today. Mike Babcock has turned to the Montreal Canadiens goalie over Roberto Luongo, who backed Canada to a gold medal in Vancouver in 2010, for Canadas final preliminary round game against the ailing Finns. You can listen to the game live on TSN Radio in Toronto, Montreal, Winnipeg, Edmonton, and Ottawa. Martin St. Louis takes his turn as the healthy scratch on forward, as Patrick Sharp draws back into the lineup. P.K. Subban will also be watching from the side with Dan Hamhuis returning to the blue line. "These are great players, great people that are committed to us winning a medal," Babcock said. "Its all about the medal. ... When you win at the end you made the right decisions, if you dont, you get second-guessed." Pittsburgh Penguins linemates Sidney Crosby and Chris Kunitz, along with Jeff Carter, will be split up for todays contest; Crosby playing alongside wingers Jamie Benn and Patrice Bergeron. "Benn, Bergeron and Tavares have been a great line," Babcock said. "But the great thing about it, is that I can put it back at any time. Ive got those lines set up where the wingers and go back and forth seamlessly. Kunitz and Nash can go tonight with Crosby in a heartbeat. So well see what happens." The team is already without Mikko Koivu and Valtteri Filppula. The ageless wonder, 42-year-old Teemu Selanne, will once again be thrust into a leading role for the Finnish offence. Since the NHL began participating in the Winter Olympics with Nagano in 1998, no player has more goals at the Games than Selannes 15. "Theyve been playing some good hockey, been putting up some big goals," Canadian defenceman Alex Pietrangelo said. "They have a lot of firepower up front and some pretty good skating D back there. When it comes to the goaltending everybody knows how deep they are back there." Either Canada or Finland can secure the number one spot in Group B with a regulation win. Sweden won Group C with a perfect 3-0 record, but with a goal-differential of five they would finish behind either team in that scenario. ST. LOUIS -- Jon Jay did not pick up a bat while missing five successive games with a sore wrist. Once he returned on Tuesday, the St. Louis outfielder quickly made up for lost time. Jay hit an RBI single with two outs in the eighth inning to break a tie and lead the Cardinals to a 3-2 win over the Boston Red Sox in a battle between the two World Series teams from last fall. "It just felt great to be back out there," Jay said. "Even better to come through." The Cardinals won their third in a row and fourth in the last five. Boston has lost three in a row. Jay blooped a hit to left off reliever Junichi Tazawa (1-3) to bring in former Red Sox A.J. Pierzynski with the winning run. All-Star reliever Pat Neshek (5-0) picked up the win by striking out the side in the eighth. St. Louis closer Trevor Rosenthal recorded his NL-leading 35th save in 39 chances. "Today was a big day for us," St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said. "There were great at-bats from everybody." Especially Jay. "I didnt swing at all until today," Jay said. "But it feels good." St. Louis starter Lance Lynn gave up two runs on four hits over seven innings. Boston starter Rubby De La Rosa surrendered one run on six hits over six innings. Pierzynski started the winning rally with a two-out hit. He was signed by the Cardinals on July 26 after being released by the Red Sox on July 16. "Everyone wants me to say bad things about the Red Sox and Im not going to do that," Pierzynski said. "Im not bitter about what happened. It just didnt work. I dont have one hard feeling. The only thing is I didnt play well enough. I have nothing but respect for the organization and how they handled everything. I was proud to say I was a Red Sox." Oscar Taveras followed Pierzynskis hit with a single to set the stage for Jay. "They did a good job of putting the bat on the ball," Boston manager John Farrell said of the Cardinals. "It seemed like Junichi had the eighth inning well in hand with two out, two strikes and nobody on. Three consecutive base hits and that was the difference." WHERE ARE THE CHAMPS? Only 13 players remain from the Red Sox 25-man roster that won the World Series last fall. Through trades and attrition, the average age of the team dropped from 31 on Opening Day, to 28 on Tuesday. KNUCKLEBALL MAN The Red Sox have recalled knuckleball specialist Steven Wright from Triple-A Pawtucket. Wright will be making his first stint on the roster this season after four appearances last year. WACHA ON WAY BACK St. Louis RHP Michael Wacha began throwing on flat ground Tuesday in hopes of returning to the starting rotation in early September. He has not pitched since June 17 with a stress reaction in his right shoulder. TRAINERS ROOM Red Sox: Newly acquired OF Allen Craig was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a sore ankle. He suffered the injury Friday while running to first on a ground out. OF Corey Brown was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket and in uniform for Tuesdays game. He was hitting .226 with 16 homers and 39 RBI. Shane Victorino underwent successful lumbar discectomy surgery in Los Angeles on Tuesday. ON DECK St. Louis RHP Shelby Miller (8-8, 4.14) will face close friend Joe Kelly (2-2, 4.37) in the second game of the three-game series on Wednesday. Kelly, who spent two-plus seasons with the Cardinals, will be making his first start for the Red Sox since being acquired in a trade July 31. Delhi Daredevils batsman Karun Nair’s bat went flying in the IPL as he tried to hit Ashok Dinda for a boundary. Ajinkya Rahanes half-century led Pune to victory However, the visitors then took Mohammad Shami for 20 runs from the 18th - five wides and an MS Dhoni six among the carnage - and although Dhoni (27 off 20) was caught brilliantly by Billings on the boundary, two meaty maximums from Thisara Perera (14no off 5) ended Delhis chances before Rahane sealed Punes victory with a leg-side four.Catch more IPL action on Friday as Sunrisers Hyderabad welcome Gujarat Lions. TUCSON, Ariz. -- Arizonas offence was disjointed, the shots werent falling, the free throws clanging one after another. Playing without injured forward Brandon Ashley for the first time, the second-ranked Wildcats looked out of sorts on the offensive end, leaving them in jeopardy of their first losing streak of the season. Good thing they know how to play defence, particularly when the game is on the line. Digging in over the closing minutes, Arizona overcame a rough shooting night to win in their first game without Ashley, grinding out a 67-65 victory over Oregon on Thursday night. "Our defence down the stretch is what we rely on," said Nick Johnson, who led Arizona with 18 points. "We have all year." The Wildcats needed it against Oregon. Coming off its first loss of the season, Arizona (22-1, 9-1 Pac-12) laboured offensively without Ashley, who is out for the season with a foot injury suffered last Saturday in a loss at California. The Wildcats went 4 for 16 from three-point range, missed 16 free throws and had a tough time even getting into their set plays. They turned up the pressure with the game on the line and, as they have for much of the season, found a way to make the big plays when they needed to. Point guard T.J. McConnell missed seven of his first eight shots before dropping in a three-pointer with 90 seconds left to give Arizona the lead. Johnson went 5 of 16 from the field, but kept fighting his way through it and hit 5 of 6 free throws in the final 47 seconds. Rondae Hollis-Jefferson provided the Wildcats with a big lift, too, finishing with 14 points, 10 rebounds and all kinds of not-in-the-box score contributions with his hustle in his first start in place of Ashley. "Our offence was a little out synch play-wise, but we battled back," McConnell said. "Weve done that so many times this year, been in games like that before, so I think were a battle-tested team." Oregon (15-7, 3-7) held its composure in one of college basketballs toughest road arenas, keeping the Wildcats at bay well into the second half. When Arizona turned up the pressure and the fans in the McKale Center turned up the noise, the Ducks had no answer. Oregon had a couple of key turnovers late and missed 3 of 4 free throws while shooting toward the raucous Arizona student section in the final 23 seconds. Joseph Young and Jason Calliste had 14 points each and Damyean Dotson added 12 for the Ducks in another oh-so-close loss. "Theyre hurting," Oregon coach Dana Altman said. "This is their third two-point loss. I just told them weve got to be resilient. It hurts having an opportunity and not being able to finish." Arizona had to shuffle its lineup with Ashley out, moving Hollis-Jefferson into the starting lineup and long-range shooter Gabe York into his sixth-man role. The new-look rotation was solid early, dropping in 3-pointers and flying in for dunks while Kaleb Tarczewski had his way inside for 10 points and five offensive rebounds. After that, it was a struggle. With the Ducks double-teaming Tarczewski in the post and McConnell out with his third foul late in the first half, Arizona could only find an offensive rhythm in stretches. The Wildcats didnt help themselves at the free throw line, either, making 11 of 19 in the first half. Arizona got off to a slow start in the second half and trailed most of the way as the shots continued to bounce away. The Wildcats have proven to be strong-minded most of the season -- their only loss was on a last-second shot by Cal -- and again found a way to pull out a not-so-pretty victory. "Tonights game is a real tribute to the team that we have in that it took a lot of resiliency on our part, a lot of belief and toughness because things werent going our way," Arizona coach Sean Miller said. Oregon, the defending Pac-12 tournament champion, has been in a downward spiral since conference play started, losing five straight after being ranked as high as 10th. The Ducks bounced back with two wins in their previous three games, but still needed to start winning to have a chance at returning to the NCAA tournament. After a slow start, Oregon started dropping in shots to lead 38-37 at halftime. The Ducks pushed the lead to seven points midway through the second half, but faltered down the stretch. Oregon fell behind by four after a shot-clock violation and a wild three-point attempt by Young, yet still had a chance in the closing seconds. The Ducks pulled within 64-62 on Dominic Artis shot in the lane, but he missed two free throws and Calliste hit 1 of 2 as Arizonas fans waved wildly in the background. "I thought we were in pretty good shape, but didnt finish it," Altman said. Arizona did, just as it has most of the season. The lasting image of Sundays race, however, will be Scott Dixon stuck in his car against the wall after another unfortunate run-in with rival Will Power. Pagenaud charged to the lead after a series of collisions involving several other contenders on the bumpy, challenging street course that runs through the middle of the city. None of those mishaps was more significant than the one involving Dixon and Power. Last week at Sonoma, Dixon held the lead until he received a drive-through penalty with 15 laps to go for hitting a tire in the left hand of Powers tire holder. Power won the race. On Saturday, Power spun Dixon during practice. Then came Sunday, when the duo ran into each other again -- quite literally. During a restart on the 53rd lap, Power swerved right in a crowd in front of Dixon while trying to pass Sebastien Bourdais. Power clipped the barrier, and Dixon ultimately lost control and smacked into the wall, ending his day. Afterward, a distraught Power said, "I was just looking at Bourdais back. I had a good run on him and I was going to go off his inside. Dixon, obviously, had the same run on me. I feel bad. I just didnt even think to look in my mirror. I was just trying to win the race, trying to beat Bourdais. I feel terrible. Im just so sorry." Power made it to the pit but was given a penalty for interference and finished 18th, one spot ahead of Dixon. Dixon was mad at just about everybody, including Graham Rahal (for earlier spinning Dixons car) and Oriol Servia, whom he accused of passing him on a yellow flag. He also took a shot at IndyCar officials for not allowing him the chance to get back into the race. "That restart was a complete botch," Dixon said. "I had an overtake advantage on Power -- it must have been in fourth gear, so they cant complain about wheel spin. Then I got beside him and he ran me straight into the wall. Then, they wouldnt (let me) bring the car back." James Hinchcliffe of Oakville, Ont., was seventh. It was the second career victory for Pagenaud, both this year. The 29-year-old Frenchman joiins Power and Ryan Hunter-Reay as winners of this 3-year-old race.dddddddddddd "I struggled there for a bit, but we picked up in the middle section there (and) we got very lucky on the restarts," Pagenaud said. Bourdais, who finished third behind Josef Newgarden, said about the wacky afternoon: "It was one those races, when you finish, you feel like you survived. It was the usual Baltimore chaos, with one restart after another." The collision between Power and Dixon came after a pileup on the turn in front of the baseball stadium. On Lap 48, Rahal spun Dixon and created a logjam involving five cars. Minutes before that, IndyCar points leader Helio Castroneves received a black flag for a safety violation during a restart. Castroneves finished ninth but increased his points lead to 49 over Dixon, who remained in second place. Pagenaud moved into third place, 70 points off the pace. Tony Kanaan, the Indianapolis 500 winner, made IndyCar history by participating in his 212th consecutive race. He eclipsed the mark held by Jimmy Vasser while driving in the No. 11 Chevrolet for Vassers KV Racing team. Kanaan hit the wall near the end of the race and finished 15th. "It was a very physical and bizarre race," Kanaan said. Hunter-Reay fell off the pace early with an electronics issue and never recovered. He was forced to withdraw from the race after 42 laps with mechanical difficulties. "It just died all of a sudden," he said. Hunter-Reay started the day in third place in the point standings and fell to fifth. "To see the championship slip away, its frustrating," he said. James Jakes and Takuma Sato dropped out of the race early with mechanical difficulties. Luca Filippi followed, and Dario Franchitti broke down for good after 22 laps. It was a particularly bad day for Franchitti, who before the race received a 10-spot grid penalty for an unapproved engine change. Before the race, IndyCar officials placed rookie Tristan Vautier on probation and fined him $10,000 for actions during qualifying Saturday, when his car made contact with the car driven by Rahal under a waving yellow flag condition. The Toronto club announced Tuesday that it will play its first ever match against the United Soccer League Pro team Wed., June 18 at Legion Stadium in Wilmington, N.C. "This is another opportunity to strengthen our relationship with our affiliate club and bring Toronto FC into their market, all while giving our players match minutes during the break." Toronto FC currently has three players on loan at Wilmington: goalkeeper Quillan Roberts, midfielder Manny Aparicio and forward Jordan Hamilton. The Hammerheads currently sit 10th in USL Pro table with eight points and a record of 2-1-2. The match will not effect league points for either team. WASHINGTON -- The Washington Nationals are grateful to be done with A.J. Burnett for the season, and by the end of this weekend, they will be through with the pesky Philadelphia Phillies. At that point, Washington will have cleared two significant roadblocks in its pursuit of the NL East title. Burnett scattered six singles over seven innings, Ryan Howard had two RBIs and the last-place Phillies beat Washington 3-1 Saturday to secure their first winning season against the Nationals since 2010. Dominic Brown homered for the Phillies, who have won five straight against the division leaders and hold a 10-8 advantage in the series that ends Sunday. So what is it about the Phillies that proves so troublesome to Washington? "Over the last five it hasnt been good for us," Nationals manager Matt Williams conceded. "Its been a case of them pitching really well against us, Burnett especially." The 37-year-old Burnett (8-15) allowed one run, struck out four and walked two. He improved to 4-2 with a 3.57 ERA in six outings against Washington this year. "Hes a good matchup against our guys," Williams said. "He seems to throw strikes against us. His walk total against us is certainly lower than the other teams he faces. Its one of those things in baseball." Burnetts 80 walks are most in the majors, but against Washington this season hes got 33 strikeouts and just 15 walks. "He just goes out there and pitches well," Nationals left fielder Bryce Harper said. "He locates. He mixes it up a lot. I got some pitches today I thought I could hit and missed. Thats something you just got to tip your cap to. So be it." It was Burnetts 400th career start. The right-hander lost his previous six road starts, and his only three wins since June 20 are all against Washington. "I was able to make pitches at the right time," Burnett said. "Threw a lot of balls in there for strikes. Important that I stayed ahead in the count, especially against that lineup." Ken Giles worked a perfect eighth and Jonathan Papelbon got three outs for his 35th save.dddddddddddd Tanner Roark (12-10) allowed three runs and six hits in six innings for Washington, striking out eight and walking one. He has lost his last three starts. "Felt good, felt like I was commanding both sides of the plate," Roark said. "Everything was sharp." On most nights, his numbers would translate to a victory. Not this time. Not against the Phillies. "Just one of those things," Roark said. "Were still in first. We cant really think about that at all." The Nationals finished with seven hits, all of them singles, ending their streak of 13 straight games with a home run. Before the game, Williams said he would take a closer-by-committee approach while struggling Rafael Soriano attempts to correct some mechanical flaws that have attributed to his 6.98 ERA since the All-Star break. Williams offered no guarantee that Soriano would return to the closers role. Burnett hit the first of four Philadelphia singles in the third inning. The last, by Howard, provided the Phillies with a 2-0 lead and increased the sluggers team-leading RBI total to 91. A sacrifice fly by Anthony Rendon made it 2-1 in the fifth, but Philadelphia got the run back in the sixth when Brown drove a 3-0 pitch into the Nationals bullpen beyond the right-field wall. Roark faced one more batter before being pulled. "It all started with a base hit by the pitcher," Williams said. "He threw Howard a curveball he hit into right field. And the 3-0 homer. Other than that he was pretty good." UP NEXT Their current records dont show it, but the starting pitchers in Sundays series finale -- Washingtons Gio Gonzalez (7-9) and Philadelphias Cole Hamel (8-6) -- rank third and fourth among NL lefties in wins over the last three seasons. Gonzalez has 39 and Hamels has 33. TOTAL RECALL After going deep into the bench during Fridays 11-inning defeat, the Nationals recalled OF Michael Taylor and RHP Ryan Mattheus from Triple-A Syracuse. The other time came from Oct. 30-Nov. 2 in the clubs second and third outings of the season. The Sixers received 27 points, seven assists and five steals from Michael Carter-Williams, but shot just 36.7 percent from the field in their third consecutive loss. LAS VEGAS -- Training camps are weeks away, but Las Vegas legal bookmakers are already making bets on what the NFL season will look like. Turns out it could be a lot like the last, with the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks and the Denver Broncos favoured to meet again next February in Arizona. Seattle is a 9-2 favourite at the LVH sports book, while the Broncos are next at 5-1 to win the Super Bowl. Both teams are favoured to win more regular-season games than any other team, with oddsmakers putting the over/under for wins at 11 games. "The Broncos have a real tough schedule so it wont be an easy task," said Jeff Sherman, part of a team that sets the odds at the LVH. "They have some tough early games outside their division, including the Super Bowl rematch with the Seahawks in Week 3." The Seahawks are 3 1/2-point favourites to beat the Broncos at home in that game, a line that figures to draw some early action even before either team puts on the pads this summer. Denver was a 2-point favourite in the Super Bowl, which Seattle won 43-8. Sherman said there is more parity than ever in the NFL, with 19 teams expected to win between seven and nine games and only five expected to win 10 or more. At the bottom of the pack is Jacksonville, with a 4 1/2-win line, and Oakland at five games. Despite the parity, teams in the NFC are favoured more than teams in the AFC. Bettors can wager on which conference wins the Super Bowl, with the NFC a 3 1/2-point favourite. "The one thing that really stood out when we sat down and went through this game by game was how many good teams are in the NFC," Sherman said. NFL games are by far the biggest attraction for sports bettors, who placed a record $119.4 million in legal wagers in Nevada on the last Super Bowl alone. Nevada is the only state where full betting on games is allowed, though bettors in Delaware can wager on parlays of more than one team. Sherman said most of the so-called "wise guys" who can move the lines at sports books wait until the exhibition season to begin making wagers, though some might pounce on the early numbers if they think the oddsmakers have made an error evaluating a team. "Once the preseason games start and you can see what the coaches are thinking it becomes more clear," he said. "But they will move in if they think there is a weakness in a line." The LVH is traditionally one of the first to post over/under win totals for the season, which were put up Sunday afternoon. Sherman said there was a small flurry of wagers made by bettors who thought teams might either be undervalued or too highly regarded by the oddsmakers. This years draft didnt change many opinions on win totals, he said, because rookies rarely have a big impact on seasons. That was particularly true with the Cleveland Browns, who are listed at 6 1/2 wins despite the addition of Johnny Manziel at quarterback. "He doesnt have an effect on what we do," Sherman said. "We like the Browns overall as a team, their defence is good and theyve gotten better even if the results dont show it. But in a tough division we just couldnt go any higher." Indians Andrew Miller Jersey .Y. -- Phil Jackson lost out on his preferred coach, but hes working hard on keeping his star player. In April of 1989, a man named Charles Yacoub hijacked a bus with 10 passengers at gunpoint in Montreal. He forced the driver to take him to Parliament Hill. I was one month into my career, a cub news reporter at CJOH, the local CTV station in Ottawa. This would be the first major story Id cover. The bus ended up on the front lawn of The Parliament Buildings, right in front of the Peace Tower. It would sit there for five tense hours, with Yacoub and the hostages inside. He would eventually surrender—and in a very strange trial I covered—somehow get acquitted of the most of the charges, including hostage taking (this was my initiation to our justice system). Those images of the bus on the lawn of our Parliament, Yacoub pacing back and forth inside with his gun, were surreal for Canadians. Especially an idealistic Ottawa boy who grew up thinking Parliament Hill was the symbol of our peaceful country. And the place we went for long, boring field trips in elementary school. They locked down the Hill that day, too. I stood with a group of reporters just outside the police perimeter, grabbing streeters (quick interviews) with stunned citizens who all said exactly what we were thinking: How could this happen in Ottawa? We said the same thing six years later, this time through tears, when sportscaster and former NHLer Brian Smith, a friend and local legend, was shot dead as he walked out of our building after doing his 6pm sportscast. The bus hijacking had been shocking, but Smittys death was unfathomable. It couldnt happen in our safe, wonderful, city. No way. But it did. A very sick man named Jeffrey Arenburg thought the media was broadcasting messages through his head. So he drove to our station and shot the first person he recognized. And everybody in Ottawa knew Smitty. Arenburg would be found not criminally responsible for Brians death, and put in a mental instittution.dddddddddddd He was released a few years later (my re-initiation to our justice system). I thought about both those awful incidents Wednesday, as the frightening--then heartbreaking--news from Ottawa broke piece-by-piece, tweet-by-tweet. It felt familiar in the worst possible way. But not shocking. That word slipped away after 9/11. We almost expect these horrific acts to happen now. Its only the when and where that catch us off-guard. Our parents generation grew up fearing wars. We fear being at the wrong place at the wrong time, when some lunatic decides to make his statement. Nathan Cirillo knew there was risk when he became a soldier, but not today. Not in Ottawa and not standing in front of a monument with an unarmed weapon, ready to smile and pose with tourists. We feel sick for his family. His friends. We tweet condolences, which never feel like enough. I cover sports for a living. I wont attempt to offer an opinion on the issues that stem from what happened today—terrorism, politics, religion, national security, etc. You can find plenty of that elsewhere. What I do know is that when that bus hijacking happened in 89, and more so when Smitty was killed, we felt like Ottawa would never be the same…like it was somehow tarnished. But those feelings fade in time. And they will again. I was back in town this past weekend for the Senators opener and Homecoming at Carleton University. It was spectacular. I took my parents for breakfast at Dalys, my favourite buffet right across from Parliament Hill. I drank beer with old friends, and screamed my lungs out with students dressed as Penguins (I have no idea) at the Ravens game. My hometown is hurting tonight and there are a lot of questions to be answered. But dont question this: Ottawa is a great city with great people. It was this morning. It is tonight. And it always will be. WINNIPEG - Cam Ward grinned as he described how he felt like a kid making some key saves in his Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday. Ward stole a pair of goals from Winnipeg centre Bryan Little in the first period, beginning with a pad save during a Jets two-man advantage and then displaying his quickness with a highlight-reel stick stop. Little was about to fire the puck into a wide-open side of the net, but Ward whipped out his stick and the puck hit the paddle. "It was a fun save," Ward said with a chuckle after making 34 stops. "The initial shot was in a position where I knew I was going to have to kick out a bit of a rebound. Just out of pure desperation, I threw my stick out there and made a save that brings you back to the ol street hockey days as a kid. "But Little, I think he got even with me scoring that second goal in the third period so it all evens out." Jets head coach Paul Maurice, who coached the Hurricanes for parts of 11 seasons, even tipped his hat to Ward. "Cam Ward was the story of this hockey game," Maurice said. "He was the best player on the ice." The Jets had mounted a 9-0 advantage in shots on goal on the way to a 13-6 gap at the end of a scoreless first period. Ward then got some offensive help from his teammates, as brothers Eric and Jordan Staal and Riley Nash each scored within a span of two minutes and 53 seconds in the second. Defenceman Andrej Sekera had a pair of assists for the Hurricanes (31-31-9) to give him 31 on the season to go with 11 goals. Jets centre Jim Slater had scored his first goal of an injury-marred season 7:48 into the second, but Eric Staal got the roll going 37 seconds later with his 17th goal of the season. Little scored his 21st goal of the season for Winnipeg (32-31-9) 1:27 into the third period. Al Montoya stopped 29 shots while making his fourth straight start in net for Winnipeg since Ondrej Pavelec went out with a lower-body injury. Hes expected to return to action next week. Montoya was pointing the finger at himself for the loss. "We came out firing. Their goaltender played well," Montoya said. "I didnt make the saves I needed to make and at the end of the day that cost us the game." Maurice said Montoya was wrong. "If a guy is clearly the reason youre in the hole, Ill get him out of the net before that happens," Maurice said. "They get to this level thinking they should stop everything. He will feel that because hes got a front-row seat to the way the guy at the other end is playing so its magnified." Carolina head coach Kirk Muller said Wards stellar play was inspiring for his teammates. "The guys knew that he was giving a great effort and he was keeping us in there," Muller said. "They were like, Hey, weve got to surround him with some better play here and, fortunately, we got timely goals. We played better the rest of the game and it was a nice team effort for everybody." Ward has battled through two injuries this season and was bumped to backup for Anton Khudobin, who was in net for Carolinas 3-2 loss to Chicago Friday night. Carolina returns home for a game Tuesday against the New York Islanders. Winnipeg, which heads out on a five-game road trip beginning Monday in Dallas, remains at 73 points. Heading into the game, the Jets were six points back of the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference. The Jets were coming off a 5-4 overtime win against Colorado on March 19. The loss to Carolina was Winnipegs 40th one-goal game this season and they are 18-13-9 in those outings. Jordan Staal made it 2-1 when he went through Jets defenders and scored over Montoyas blocker at 10:10 of the second while Slater was in the penalty box for tripping. Maurice said Winnipegs first period was "about as good as were going to play," but Staals power-play marker hurt. "No doubt we got tight at 2-1," he said. "You could feel it." The Jets, who were outshot 21-8 in the second, were working without defenceman Zach Bogosian, who left the game in the period with an upper-body injury that Maurice said isnt too serious. It appeared Stuart tied it up six minutes after Littles goal, but the goal was waved off for goaltender interference as Jets defenceman Dustin Byfuglien fell on top of Ward in the crease and was lying on his right arm. Winnipeg pulled Montoya with about 65 seconds left in the game and swarmed Ward, but the veteran held tough. The Jets outshot the Hurricanes 15-5 in the third. Notes: Jordan Staals power-play goal was the first the Jets have allowed at home in five consecutive games. Winnipegs penalty kill was ranked fifth-best (84.8 per cent) in the NHL heading into the game … Both the Jets and Hurricanes are 2-3-0 in their last five games … The game was the second one of Carolinas 18th set of back-to-back games this season. It plays two more. Only Jersey has more back-to-back sets this season with 22. The Hurricanes so far are 9-8-1 in the first game of their sets and 5-10-3 in the second game. After a preliminary examination of the contracts involved in Neymars signing, judge Pablo Ruz wrote in a ruling there is "sufficient elements for the admission of the lawsuit" brought by club member Jordi Cases. On Monday, Rosell insisted the total cost of 57 million euros (then $74 million) to bring Neymar from Brazilian club Santos announced at the players presentation last June was correct. Cases alleges the amount paid by the Spanish champions was higher and that Rosell misappropriated funds by hiding the real cost to the club behind false contracts, a criminal offence punishable by up to six years of prison. Cases told El Pais newspaper on Monday "the lawsuit is against Rosell, not against Barca." "We dont think that somebody kept the money," Cases said. "We only want to know how they account for the expenditures, because it isnt clear." Barcelona is owned by its more than 160,000 members, who elect a president and governing board. Barcelona made 482.6 million euros ($654 million) in revenue last season, second only to fierce rival Real Madrid, according to accountancy firm Deloitte. Rosell and other members of his board have repeatedly said the contracts involved in Neymars transfer included confidentiality clauses that dont allow them to reveal the exact amount of the 57 million euros received by Santos, and the three companies, DIS, TEISA and N&N, who owned shares of Neymars rights. To proceed with tthe suit, Ruz asked that FIFA and the Brazilian football federation present documentation related to the Neymar transfer; Neymar da Silva Santos Junior provide the contract he signed with the company N&N, run by his father Neymar Silva Santos, that ceded it his "future economic rights"; and for Barcelona to hand over contracts for the payment of 7.dddddddddddd9 million euros for the rights to three Santos "youth players" and the contracts for the payment of 9 million euros to play two friendlies with Santos. Rosell said Monday he would be willing to answer any questions Ruz might have regarding the deal. "We respect all the contracts we sign," Rosell said. "Thats why I would be delighted for the judge to summon me for questioning so I can explain all the questions related to the contract." Rosell, at least for now, will not have to appear before the judge in Madrid because Ruz said there was no "urgency or need" for him to be summoned. Ruz is also presiding over a high-profile corruption case that has rocked Spains ruling party regarding an alleged slush fund run by former Popular Party treasurer Luis Barcenas. The 21-year-old Neymar, who led Santos on its greatest run since Pele stopped playing in the 1970s, has scored 11 goals since joining Barcelona. He is sidelined with a right ankle injury for two-to-three weeks. This is the second major ongoing legal dispute involving Barcelona players. A court near Barcelona questioned Lionel Messi and his father Jorge in September after a Spanish state prosecutor filed a complaint that the Argentina star owed 4 million euros in back taxes. Brooke Henderson was hoping to just make the cut at the U.S. Womens Open. Instead, the 16-year-old from Smiths Falls, Ont., left Pinehurst No. 2 as the low amateur in one of the biggest tournaments in womens golf. “Theres a lot of great amateurs that qualified here this week at the U.S. Open,” said Henderson after finishing up with a 69 in the final round. “I mean, tied 11 right now is where I stand and thats great. Coming in, I was trying to make the cut and then climb up the leaderboard, and I was able to do that. So Im very happy.” Henderson actually ended up tied for 10th, a significant finish as it gives her a spot in next years tournament. After 13 holes, she was three under for her day and tied for fifth spot, but a double bogey on the 16th dropped her back. She finished up the tournament at five over par. “My ball striking was really big for me today,” said Henderson. “I made two mistakes off the tee which cost me a double and a bogey, but other than that, I was hitting it really well and had a couple tap-in birdies, which is really nice.” Henderson said she found the course extremely tough in the early going, and was almost intimidated by it. But she found her stride as the week went on and was especially good off the tee, hitting 48 of 56 fairways for the week. The big prize for the week came as Henderson earned the medal as the low amateur, besting Minjee Lee of Australia, the No. 1-ranked amateur in the world. It also gave the Team Canada member a wealth of confidence in where she wants to be. “The best players in the world are here and to know that Im right up there, its really awesome,” she stated. “I still have a long way to go to where I want to be in the next couple years, but its really exciting to know that I have the potential and it was a great finish here this week.” Henderson has a busy summer ahead of her. This is no time to be picky. This is playoff time. Zach McAllister lasted five innings and the Indians got two unearned gift runs from Houston in a 2-1, rain-shortened victory over the Astros on Friday night and moved into one of the two AL wild-card spots. The game was delayed for 1 hour, 9 minutes before the umpires decided to call it after 6 1-2 innings. Shortly after Clevelands win, Texas lost to Kansas City, allowing the Indians to jump the Rangers in the wild-card standings. Its the first time the Indians have been atop the ever-changing board since Aug. 4. "For us to be able to get this win, regardless of how we got it, its all about the Ws at this point," first baseman Nick Swisher said. "And if we keep winning, the season keeps going, and hopefully everyone here in Cleveland gets real happy." The Indians, who entered the night trailing both Tampa Bay and Texas by one-half game for a wild-card spot, scored an unearned run in the second and fourth innings off Brett Oberholtzer (4-4). McAllister (9-9) allowed just one run and got a key double play in the fifth as well as a diving catch by centre fielder Michael Bourn in the first inning, a defensive gem that set the tone. Cleveland also got two innings of hitless relief from Marc Rzepczynski and Bryan Shaw, who struck out three of four batters he faced for his first save. Brandon Laird homered for the inept Astros, who committed three errors, lost their seventh straight and fell to 51-103 -- four losses shy of matching the club record set last season. "Errors are a part of the game," Astros manager Bo Porter said. "We all know that, but at the same time you expect those plays to be made in a major league baseball game." The win improved Clevelands record to 48-18 against teams currently below .500 -- the majors best mark -- and perhaps the biggest reason the Indians have a chance to make the playoffs for the first time since 2007. With a very favourable schedule ahead, the Indians were hoping to capitalize on a four-game series against baseballs worst team to stay in the wild-card fray. They needed 11 innings on Thursday to finally beat Houston 2-1, and then got a major assist from the awful Astros -- and Mother Nature -- to win again. As they waited out the delay, Indians fans kept tabs on the Tampa Bay-Baltimore and Texas-Kansas City games on Progressive Fields giant scoreeboard.dddddddddddd. It was a similar scene in Clevelands clubhouse as players stayed tuned to the action elsewhere. "Theres 18 TVs in here, theres games all over the place," Swisher said. "Theres games you might not even want to be watching that are on. Right now, its watch time. Weve got ourselves in a great spot and just to be able to be here, a complete turnaround from last year, its exciting. Its nice. It feels like people are jumping on board right now and its the perfect time to do it." McAllister worked in and out of trouble in the fifth, when his slim lead seemed about to vanish. The Astros loaded the bases on a single, walk and single, but the right-hander got leadoff hitter Jonathan Villar to bounce into a 4-6-3 double play to preserve Clevelands 2-1 lead. McAllister threw four straight balls to Jose Altuve to start the sixth and was immediately lifted by Indians manager Terry Francona, who wasnt going to wait for the situation to worsen and went to his bullpen. Rzepczynski came on and got two outs -- one when catcher Carlos Santana threw out Altuve trying to steal -- before Shaw struck out Chris Carter. With the heavy rain approaching, and the weather forecast looking bleak, the Indians took a 2-1 lead in the fourth thanks to two errors by the Astros on one play. Ryan Raburn hit a one-out single and Asdrubal Cabrera walked. Michael Brantley then hit a grounder to first baseman Carter, who tried to get a forceout at second but threw wildly into left field, allowing Raburn to score. Both runners advanced when a throw to the plate by left fielder Marc Krauss hit a sliding Raburn in the shoulder and the ball skipped to the backstop, a sequence more suited to a Little League field than a major league ballpark. McAllister got two quick outs in the second before Lairds fourth homer gave the Astros a 1-0 lead. NOTES: The Indians are 14 games over .500 for the first time since May 24, 2011. ... Indians RHP Justin Masterson (oblique) threw a 33-pitch bullpen session, and its possible the All-Star could pitch if the Indians make the post-season. Masterson, who has been out since Sept. 2, will be re-evaluated Saturday and could throw a simulated game as soon as Monday. ... The Indians have spread around the walk-off wealth. They have had 10 wins in their final at-bat with nine different players getting the game-winning hit. Jason Kipnis is the only player with two walk-off hits. ... MONTREAL -- Charles Hamelin is confident that he wont stop at just one gold medal at the world short-track speedskating championships. Three weeks after winning gold in the 1,500 metres at the Sochi Olympics, Hamelin did it again Friday as he cruised to the win in the opening event at the Maurice Richard Arena. The 1,500 used to be the weakest event for the Ste-Julie, Que., skater, but now he seems to own the distance as he easily finished ahead of Han Tianyu of China and bronze medallist Park Se Yeong of South Korea. Earlier this week, the 29-year-old Hamelin announced that he will continue to skate at least four more years until the 2018 Winter Games in South Korea. "In the 1,500 metres, every time I go on the podium now it proves that the work Ive done in the last four years has really paid off," he said. "Its proof that Im improving year after year. "Thats a big part of why I wanted to continue for four more years. You can see Im still strong. After a big event like Sochi, I was able to come back and refocus on what I need to do here. Im ready." Now he hopes to avoid the bad luck that followed his Olympic gold. In Sochi, he inexplicably fell in the heats of both the 500 and 1,000-metre events, dashing his hopes of sweeping the individual distances. He said the world championships are different because, instead of waiting a day or two between skates like at the Olympics, he will be back on the track Saturday for the 500 metres and the mens relay heats and again on Sunday for the 1,000, the 3,000, and, he hopes, the relay final. "Momentum is a big part of it and right now, its on my side," he said. "I had a great race and I know Im strong in the 500 and 1,000 metres." Hamelins goal is to win the overall title, which goes to the skater who does best cumulatively in the individual events. He has come second for that honour twice, but has never won it. He said the first rule is to avoid a disqualification in any race. The large crowd of mostly school children in the stands was worried that might happen when, halfway through the race, Hamelin nearly crashed into a South Korean. He managed to stay upright and then pass Han on the final lap to claim the win. Race officials did not call a foul. "He passed me on the outside and came back really quickly in front of me," said Hamelin. "He was one or two centimetres from hitting my blades. "It could have been a disaster for me, but I was able to control myself and not push too hard or lose too much speed. For him, the race was kind of over. It was a scary moment in the race." Hamelins biggest rival in recent years, five-time overall world champion Victor An of Russia, formerly known as Ahn Hyun-Soo of South Korea, never mounted a challenge and finished fourth. An won three golds and a bronze in Sochi. Wu Dajing of China was fifth ahead of South Koreans Lee Han-Bin and Sin Da Woon. Olivier Jean of Lachenaie, Que., and Charle Cournoyer of Boucherville, Que., were eliminated in the semifinals. South Korea swept the podium in the womens 1,500. Shim Suk Hee finished first ahead of Kim Alang and Park Seung-Hi. Valerie Maltais of La Baie, Que., was caught at the finish line by Park and settled for fourth. Marianne St-Gelais lost in the semifinals while Marie-Eve Drolet was beaten in the heats and was classified 22nd. MALMO, Sweden - Ending a four-year run without a gold medal wont be easy for Canada at the world junior hockey championship. The quest begins with what is supposed to be an easy one, although Germany has traditionally been a stubborn opponent to Canadian teams at international tournaments. "Youve got to expect theyll be structured and hard working," coach Brent Sutter said Wednesday after a one-hour skate at the cosy Isstadion, where they face the Germans on Thursday. "Theyll be ready to play. "That game is the biggest game to date we have. It doesnt matter our opponent, its how we have to play. Lets make sure were responsible." You can watch all the action live on TSN beginning at 7am et/4am pt. Pre-tournament exhibition games against Finland, Sweden and Switzerland showed that while the Canadian squad — led by Halifax Mooseheads star Jonathan Drouin — will be among the better teams in the 10-team event, it doesnt have the speed and offensive flash of some of the 15 Canadian teams that won gold in the past. The host team Sweden, with at least 10 players returning from a squad that won silver last year in Ufa, Russia, looks like the team to beat, especially after the 3-0 beating they put on Canada in an exhibition game last week. The Swedes are in the opposite first-round group and will play at the newer, much larger Malmo Arena. Canada has only three players back from the 2013 tournament. They include Drouin, Jake Paterson (who didnt dress for any games in Ufa as the third goalie), and defenceman Griffin Reinhart, who is suspended for the first three games this year from a slashing incident in last years semifinals. The loss in Ufa ended Canadas 14-year run of top-three finishes at the tournament officially called the IIHF world under-20 championship. This years squad is younger than most, and should be a showcase for three players not even eligible to be drafted by the NHL yet. First among them is Connor McDavid, the dazzling 16-year-old playmaker and scoring star of the Erie Otters who will not be eligible for the draft until 2015. There is also forward Sam Reinhart of the Kootenay Ice, the younger brother of Griffin Reinhart, along with big defenceman Aaron Ekblad of the Barrie Colts. They may go one-two in the 2014 draft. Sutter has McDavid and Reinhart on the wings with centre Bo Horvat, an imposing Vancouver Canucks prospect from the London Knights. They were the only line to stay together through the teams three pre-tournament games. Reinhart turned 18 in November and is not a true "underage" junior, and Sutter uses him as he would a seasoned veteran. In exhibition play, he played the power play and on the penalty kill. In one instance when Canada was short-handed two men, he was the lone forward on the ice. "Hes an all-purpose player," said Sutter. "He just knows how to play the game. "Hes an intelligent player and his paying attention to details in all sorts of situations is very high. As a coach, youre very comfortable playing him in whatever situation that occurs." Reinhart is used to the ice time with Kootenay and was a captain on Canadian under-18 teams, so he likes the responsibility Sutter has given him. "It gives you confidence for opening night," he said. "We took some games to find our mentality and what well bring to the first one. "We feel confident in our game right now. The focus has turned onto the first game against Germany and were looking forward to it." The exhibition games were a test for Drouin, the third overall pick of the Tampa Bay Lightning last June. Sutter blasted him for a weak showing against Sweden, even though it was Drouins first game since suffering a concussion in a league game with Halifax on Dec. 8. He was moved from left wing to centre for the final exhibition against the Swiss and played better. "Brent said some stuff," said Drouin, who will likely centre big winger Anthony Mantha and the defensively solid Taylor Leier of the Portland Winterhawks. "I know I played bad and didnt help the team. "I had to step up my game against the Swiss and I think I did. I feel better. The first game was a little rough. Its been three weeks (since he played) and its different from major junior. Its way more fast, but I think the second game was better." Another question to be settled was in goal, and Sutter believes hes found his man in Paterson of the Saginaw Spirit, who will start against Germany. The Mooseheads Zach Fucale will start the tournament as the backup, but Sutter expects both will see action in the tournament. Other lines are likely to have Nic Petan of Portland between Curtis Lazar of the Edmonton Oil Kings and Kerby Rychel of the Gueph Storm; and captain Scott Laughton of the Oshawa Generals with Frederik Gauthier of the Rimouski Oceanic and Josh Anderson of the Knights. Charles Hudon of the Chicoutimi Sagueneens may slot in the Drouin line. The defence will likely be rearranged when Griffin Reinhart returns Dec. 31 against the Americans. Sutter has been trying various combinations for a group that includes Ekblad, Matt Dumba of the Minnesota Wild, Chris Bigras of the Owen Sound Attack, McDavids Erie teammate Adam Pelech, Josh Morrissey of the Prince Albert Raiders and Derrick Pouliot of Portland. Without a high-powered attack, there has been much talk of playing "Boston Bruins hockey," which despite popular perception does not mean hammering everyone who moves, but rather working the puck up the ice in tight, five-man units and playing a controlled two-way game. "It is the makeup of our team," said Sutter, who won gold with a similar group in 2006. "We have to support each other. "We cant be a spread-out team thats playing one zone and two zones ahead. We have to be coming out of zones together and using each other. When one guy has the puck, the other four have to be options and be available for plays. And we have to be smart when were hitting the red line. We cant have turnovers." The game against Germany is a chance to see flashy forward Leon Draisaitl, who is Morrisseys teammate in Prince Albert. Draisaitl is a projected top-10 pick in 2014. They played against one another at the under-18 championship, and Morrissey said they have been joking about meeting again at the world juniors. "Hes a really skilled player," the Calgary native said. "Weve become almost best friends on our team. "Hes got phenomenal vision. I think he plays like (Anze) Kopitar. He likes (Pavel) Datsyuk a lot. All I can say is hes an unreal player." Red Sox William Cuevas Jersey . Berkman almost left the game last off-season before signing with the Texas Rangers.
